Our disinfection is not a generic spray-and-go. It is a fixed process:
Before disinfectant goes in, we need to drain. Remove sediment and sludge. Organic debris can protect bacteria from the chemical.
Spray all interior surfaces, including corners and pipe fittings where bacteria are apt to accumulate.
Ensure the disinfectant stays on the surface long enough to kill pathogens, not just pass over.
Empty tank to remove any chemical residues.
Before returning the tank to service, test for chlorine residual and bacterial counts.
This is the core of how to properly sterilize a water storage tank. Cleaning removes buildup, but sterilization is what actually neutralizes what’s living in it.
We use disinfectants rated for potable water systems – chlorine-based solutions are standard, with dosage dependent on tank size and contamination level.
Every chemical we use is:
We do not use industrial-grade disinfectants for non-potable systems, although they are less expensive. Cleaning and disinfecting water tanks for a residential or commercial water supply requires products rated specifically for that purpose.
So, how do we disinfect a water storage tank while meeting safety standards? All jobs are subject to public health standards for drinking water systems, not just tank cleaning conventions. Which means:
From residential tanks to large commercial storage systems, we follow appropriate safety and sanitization procedures for every job.

A tank can look clean and still have bacteria. The water may appear clear, but biofilm grows on the inside walls, and it is this biofilm that is the main source of contamination, not visible dirt. Untreated stored water can contain:
None of this is altered by rinsing a tank with hose water. Why is water tank sanitization a separate step, and not an optional add-on to a standard cleaning job? Because disinfection kills what cleaning alone leaves behind.
